At the time of booking we secured a three person outside view cabin for £59 per person, for the one night. One thing I’ll say early in this review is that I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this ship for disabled folks, or folks with mobility issues. There are lots of water tight seals to step over in corridors and very few elevators. Due to the small size of the ship, and the fact there weren’t any other ships docked at the terminal, it meant we breezed through. Cruise and Maritime Voyages’ demise was not something that many would have seen coming just over twelve months ago. As a cruise line with a steady base of fans and growing steadily over the years, December 2019 saw the purchase of two new vessels. We took the Antarctica 8 day excursion on the MV Marco Polo on January 31st of 2003. This is a bit of information on the Zodiac landings from the ship; it is written in an effort to help those who are on their first excursion and might have apprehensions about this adventure. For a ship of her size we were pleasantly surprised how many bars and lounges the MS Marco Polo had to offer. I’ve never shared a cabin with more than one other person before, but due to the generous size of the cabin and plenty of storage space it was far more enjoyable than I had anticipated. Four other former CMV vessels were also put up for auction and have now been sold to another line or for scrap. Usually, in these cases, a ship that’s set to be scrapped will remain just off the coast for up to several days to prepare for a safe beaching. Once a ship is beached it doesn’t take long until the first pieces start getting cut and it usually begins from the bow. The boat had 11 decks, of which 8 passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.
Unusual today, the open timber decks allow passengers to walk right around the ship. The Marco Polo can accommodate over 800 passengers but only takes around 425 for this trip. MS Marco Polo was built as "Aleksandr Pushkin" in 1965 by Mathias-Thesen Werft (East Germany) for Baltic Shipping Company (USSR-Soviet Union).
